Wood Duck Nesting Boxes

Duck Boxes

Florida Wildlife Federation board member Bob Taylor of Lake Hamilton has constructed over 400 cypress wood duck nesting boxes during the past several years.  We are grateful that Bob is continuing this effort donating his time to build the nest boxes and seeking donations for the Florida Wildlife Federation for the nest boxes, which come in four sizes.  The minimum donation for the smallest box is $30.00.

Bob Taylor began making wood duck nesting boxes six years ago to honor his friend Richard Coleman of the Florida Sierra Club who was killed in a tragic airboat accident in 2003.  Bob and Richard Coleman had worked together on the construction of nest boxes and placed many of them in central Florida.  After Richard’s untimely death, Bob continued making the boxes to honor Richard and to help his local Sierra Club chapter.

The nesting boxes help to replace natural nesting sites which are being lost to rapid development which is occurring all across Florida.  Wood ducks are very colorful waterfowl that are thought by many to be the nation’s most beautiful duck.  They nest off the ground and only in hollow spaces that may be located twenty or more feet above the ground or water, but more commonly are found nearer to the surface.  In central Florida, where Bob Taylor resides, wood duck hens may lay two clutches of eight to fourteen eggs each season with the earliest occurring in February, March or April.  A second setting is more likely to occur if the nesting box is cleaned and new bedding is added after the first set of ducklings has left the nest.  Screech owls also readily accept these boxes when placed in areas they inhabit (most of Florida).  In addition, many other bird species will typically use the nest boxes.  The kind of bird that will use the box is contingent upon the size of the opening through which they enter the box.

Bob constructs these boxes from native cypress which is one of the most durable woods available.  They are designed for easy cleaning simply by unsnapping the fastener at the bottom of the front panel and pulling forward.**

To make a donation to the Federation and to receive one of these nest boxes, please email Diane Hines.  You may also call the Federation office at 850-656-7113. The donation amounts are $30, $60, $80 and $150 plus the cost of shipping and handling will be added to your order.
