Tequesta Trace Middle School wins Kid's Habitat Contest

Tequesta Trace Middle School in Weston, Florida has been picked as the winner in Florida Wildlife Federation's Kid's Habitat Contest.

The habitat, which is a butterfly garden, was planted and is tended by students, with the guidance of Glory Andreolas, who teaches science at the school. The habitat is located centrally at the school, and is used as an outdoor classroom. Each butterfly host plant has an identification sign, with the scientific name and a color picture of the butterfly it serves. The school has a Butterfly Club that meets once a week for a half-hour.

Both teachers and students learn about butterflies native to the area from the signage, and about the basic yard work needed to attract and maintain these beautiful creatures, and this knowledge is being carried home and into the community by students who are interested in establishing a habitat for butterflies in their own yards.
