CLIMATE SUMMIT SETS STAGE FOR ENERGY FUTURE
Tallahassee - On the eve of the much anticipated Climate Change Summit in Miami, the Florida Wildlife Federation salutes Governor Charlie Crist for his commitment to addressing Florida's energy future and global warming. The list of dignitaries and distinguished experts in the fields of climate change and energy who will headline this summit is truly impressive. Somewhat overshadowed by all the attention to the star-power gathering in Miami is the strong message Governor Crist himself has sent that Florida must address these issues now. His leadership has shown other centrist politicians that expressing concerns and offering solutions that benefit our environment is not only safe political ground but pays huge dividends. In countless opinion polls Floridians continue to support leaders, like Governor Crist, who do not dodge the hard issues we must confront as a state and for this nation.
Just as he committed to in his State of the State Address, Governor Crist has begun to assemble "the best minds" to flesh out a plan for Florida to meet its obligation to protect our citizens and mitigate the impacts of climate change. Earlier this summer the Governor took two important steps that back up his message - he applauded the Public Service Commission for its denial of a proposal to build a coal-fired plant on the edge of the Everglades, setting in motion a series of actions that have, for all intent, stopped further development of old style coal plants in Florida. This is a critical first step in addressing one of the leading causes of global warming, carbon dioxide emission. Secondly, he vetoed a weakened energy bill that, in his own words, "did not go far enough in addressing Florida s future energy needs." The Governor is correct. We can and we must do more than what was previously proposed to achieve energy efficiency and sustainable energy sources.
"The Florida Wildlife Federation supports Governor Crist's efforts to push Florida toward a clean, renewable energy future," stated Manley Fuller, President of the Federation. "We stand ready to assist in shaping policy and formulating practical solutions that help Florida continue to prosper while addressing our role in global climate change and protecting our fragile environment."
