Florida Wildlife Federation Friends and Clean Water Supporters:
Florida’s toxic slime problem is a national disgrace and requires a national response. More than 1,800 miles of our rivers and streams and 350,000 acres of our waterways are polluted with high levels of phosphorus and nitrogen, resulting in green slime that covers our waters. Florida’s tourism industry, our home values and public health suffer from this decades old problem. Clean water will mean more jobs and a better economic future.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency proposed a standard to clean up Florida’s waterways. Unfortunately, the Florida Legislature, at the urging of well-placed special interests, it is set to approve weaker clean water standards which will actually result in more pollution. The state’s plan won’t crack down on polluters until our waterways are in miserable shape.
What Floridians need are enforceable pollution limits that will protect our waters from turning into toxic green cesspools
. Please tell the White House that the EPA must remain firm and protect Florida’s citizens and her environment.A form letter to the White House is provided below.
Thank you!

Dear President Obama:
Please Clean Up Florida’s Waterways! Florida's water pollution is a national disgrace. Rivers, streams and lakes are contaminated by sewage, fertilizer and manure. Dangerously toxic algae closes our beaches, hurts tourism and decreases our home values. Commercial and recreational fisheries are harmed and precious jobs have been lost.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed a rational and reliable standard to clean up Florida’s waterways. Now it appears EPA is set to retreat from this well-reasoned position and approve Florida's much weaker standards which will actually result in more pollution.
Florida needs enforceable and sufficient pollution limits that will protect Florida's waters from turning into toxic green slime. The state has proven incapable of enforcing adequate standards. Please ensure the EPA stands firm and provides Floridians with clean water.
Sincerely,
